Imitrex
Imitrex pain relief drug is used for treatment of migraine and headache with or without aura (for example, flashing lights, wavy lines, dark spots). It is also used to treat headaches cluster. Imitrex is a serotonin 5-HT agonist 1receptor ( “triptans”). It works by restricting the blood vessels in the brain, which helps to alleviate migraine headaches and cluster.
Do NOT use Imitrex if:
- You are allergic to any ingredient in Imitrex
- Do you have a history of ischemic heart disease (such as angina, heart attack), coronary artery disease (CAD), and other moderate to severe heart problems, brain blood vessel disease (eg, stroke, transient ischemic attack) or other blood vessels disease (eg, Raynaud’s syndrome, ischemic bowel disease)
- Do you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or severe liver problems
- There are certain types of migraine (for example, schizophrenia, basic)
- Have you used some other migraine drugs within the past 24 hours. These include a derivative of ergot (for example, dihydroergotamine, methysergide) or another a serotonin 5-HT receptor agonist (eg, eletriptan, rizatriptan)
- you are taking sibutramine
Before using Imitrex:
Some medical conditions may interact with Imitrex drug. Tell your health care provider if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding
- If you are taking any medicine without prescription or preparing herbal or dietary supplement
- If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- If you have history of liver or kidney problems, seizures (eg epilepsy), or heart problems
- If you have shortness of breath, chest pain, or with a history of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking or
- If you are a woman who is past menopause
- If you are a man who is older than 40 years of age
- If you are very overweight
- f a family member has had heart disease
Some drugs may interact with Imitrex drug. Tell your health care provider if you are taking other medicines, in particular one of the following:
- Selective reuptake inhibitors serotonin (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), inhibitors of serotonin reuptake of norepinephrine (eg duloxetine), orsibutramine because the risk of a serious side effect called serotonin syndrome can be increased. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome may include mental or mood changes, hallucinations, fast heart rate, fever, loss of coordination, muscle spasms, increased sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (eg, phenelzine), as they may increase the risk of Imitrex ’side effects
- Ergot derivatives (for example, dihydroergotamine, methysergide) or other serotonin 5-HT receptor agonists 1 (for example, eletriptan, rizatriptan), because the risk of side effects may be increased by Imitrex
