Maxalt pain relief drug is used for treatment of acute migraine headache with or without aura (flashing lights, wavy lines, dark spots) for adults. It should not be used to prevent migraine or cluster headache. Maxalt is a selective agonist of the serotonin receptor. It works narrowing of dilated blood vessels in the brain, relieving migraine headaches.

Do NOT use Maxalt if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in Maxalt
  • Are you taking ergot alkaloids (for example, ergotamine) or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine) within the last 14 days
  • Have you taken another agonist of the serotonin receptor (eg, sumatriptan) in the last 24 hours
  • Do you have a history of chest pain, the blood flow or heart disease, ischemic heart disease, irregular heartbeat, stroke, or high blood pressure not


Before using Maxalt:

Some medical conditions may interact with Maxalt. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding
  • If you are taking any medicine without prescription or preparing herbal or dietary supplement
  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • If you are obese, post menopausal, or a smoker
  • If you are schizophrenic or basic artery migraine, headaches or cluster
  • If you suffer from diabetes, liver or kidney problems, seizures, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of coronary disease

Some drugs may interact with Maxalt. Tell your health care provider if you are taking other medicines, in particular one of the following:

  • Selective reuptake inhibitors serotonin (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), because they may decrease Maxalt effectiveness
  • Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), ergot alkaloids (for example, ergotamine), or MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), because the actions and side effects of Maxalt may be increased
  • Dexfenfluramine, ergot alkaloids (for example, ergotamine), or sibutramine, because their actions and their risk of the side effects of these drugs can be increased by Maxalt

This is not a complete list of all the interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Maxalt can interact with other medications you are taking. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Maxalt:

Use maxalt pills as directed by your doctor. Check the label on medicine for the exact dosage instructions.

  • Take Maxalt by mouth with or without food.
  • Take Maxalt with plenty of liquid.
  • Another leaflet is available with Maxalt. Talk to your pharmacist if you have any questions about this information.
  • Take a single dose of Maxalt appear not just the symptoms of migraine. A second dose may be taken if there is only a partial response or symptoms of migraine return. However, do not take no earlier than two hours after the first dose. Do not take more than 30 milligrams (mg) in a period of 24 hours.
  • Do not take if additional doses do not get a response from the first dose.
  • If you miss a dose of Maxalt and you still have a headache, your doctor’s instructions follow the dosage. Contact your doctor immediately if you are not sure what to do if you miss a dose. Do not take Maxalt more often than prescribed. Do not take 2 doses at once.
